Despite the legal situation surrounding him, second-year New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones has enjoyed a solid training camp has he looks to earn a starting role.
Jones, 25, faces an August 18 court date stemming from an arrest on gun charges back in June inside Boston’s Logan International Airport.
With that as a backdrop, Jones made a stir during Patriots training camp practice on Thursday. The young defensive back abruptly left the field after a contested rep against wide receiver Kendrick Bourne.
According to Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston, teammate Shaun Wade tried to calm Jones down before safety Jabrill Peppers attempted to diffuse the situation.
“About 20 minutes later, Jones returned. He spoke to director of player personnel Matt Groh then had a long conversation with corner Jalen Mills. He remained a couple of steps back from the sideline for the remainder of practice. Jones was the last player to take the practice field as well, emerging after the team had begun stretching.”
Report on situation involving New England Patriots CB Jack Jones

A fourth-round pick of New England in the 2022 NFL Draft, Jones has had his fair share of off-field issues dating back to college. The 25-year-old corner was arrested for burglary at a Panda Express back in 2018. He was also kicked out of USC for poor academics and suspended by Arizona State for violations of team conduct.
More recently, Jones faces several serious charges for allegedly attempting to bring two loaded firearms on to a flight at Logan International Airport. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.
The charges include possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large capacity feeding device. Jones faces two charges on each count.
As for this incident during Patriots practice, we’ve yet to hear from head coach Bill Belichick or other powers that be about what transpired.
Jones played an important role for the Pats’ defense as a rookie last season, recording six passes defended and two interceptions in 13 games (two starts). Opposing quarterbacks also posted a mere 64.8 passer rating when targeting him.
