The Minnesota Vikings hold the 18th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, putting them in a position to land a quality starter on either side of the ball. While running back and cornerback seem like two obvious Vikings draft needs in 2026, there is reportedly a chance the club goes in a much different direction.
According to NFL insider Tony Pauline, people he’s spoken with at the Senior Bowl have indicated that Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores will be pushing for the team to draft an edge rusher in Round 1.

Another note from Pauline: The Vikings have had a strong presence at the Senior Bowl regarding the tight end class. While the position isn’t expected to be targeted early, Pauline does think Minnesota could wind up selecting a blocking tight end on Day 3.
Spending premium draft capital on the pass rush would be a bit of a surprise. In 2025, Minnesota led the NFL in ESPN pass-rush win rate (46 percent) and ranked third in pressure rate (28.1 percent). The Vikings’ defensive front has consistently been a strength under Flores.

However, it is worth noting that edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel is entering a contract year. If Flores believes the defense could be even better with a strong No. 4 edge rusher who could be developed into a high-end starter, perhaps it would be worth it.
What still feels likelier is the Vikings using their first-round pick to make improvements in the secondary. While All-American safety Caleb Downs will be off the board, Minnesota could take someone like LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane or safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren. Either would fill a more pressing need defensively, but some are also keeping an eye on the Vikings as a potential landing spot for running back Jeremiyah Love.
