The Minnesota Vikings‘ quarterback room for the 2026 NFL season is officially set. First up, is former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray. Then, the Vikings have 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. Most recently, they added former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz. The Vikings also have 2025 undrafted free agent signee Max Brosmer, whom Minnesota is high on.
However, only McCarthy is under contract for 2027. Meaning, the Vikings may be back in the same exact place next offseason, hunting for a new potential QB1. Of course, a strong season from Murray and/or McCarthy could change the Vikings’ future plans.
Yet, the Vikings’ uncertain future at QB recently had The Athletic‘s Jeff Howe opining that Minnesota could be a team that flirts with Baker Mayfield in free agency next offseason. Of course, that’s IF the Buccaneers let the two-time Pro Bowl QB’s contract lapse after next season. Howe also mentioned the Rams as another potential fit, especially considering Mayfield already spent part of one season in Los Angeles being coached by Sean McVay.
Mayfield has a chance to be the first QB to exceed $50 million in free agency. Considering the likely competition for his services, it’s not farfetched to believe he could corral the biggest contract in NFL history. And if quarterback Matthew Stafford retires after the 2026 season, the Los Angeles Rams and Mayfield might feel compelled to reunite. The Minnesota Vikings would be another obvious fit, but there would be a handful of teams ready to pursue the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner.
The Athletic’s Jeff Howe on Baker Mayfield
If the Buccaneers once again fail to reach the postseason in 2026, Mayfield could very well plan to move on. After all, the Buccaneers weren’t able to keep Mike Evans in town. While Emeka Egbuka and Chris Godwin still provide a strong foundation, Mayfield may feel like he can find a better opportunity elsewhere.
