Heading into the offseason, few expected the Minnesota Vikings to move on from their general manager of the past three seasons. What everyone did anticipate, was the Vikings adding a new quarterback who could help push J.J. McCarthy to be the best competitor he could be. The Vikings found that by signing former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray.

It turns out that Murray isn’t the only QB the Vikings wanted to add. Now, there’s a fourth arm entering the Vikings’ suddenly crowded QB room.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Vikings agreed to another one-year contract with free agent Carson Wentz on Thursday. That’s three top-10 selections in the Vikings’ QB room, with Murray and McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They’re also joined by 2025 undrafted signee Max Brosmer.

Wentz, the former No. 2 pick of the 2026 NFL Draft, ended up starting five games for the Vikings last season. With Murray expected to be the starter, it’s possible Wentz beats out McCarthy for the primary backup job. Either way, he adds experience to a QB room that was a bit light on it aside from Murray.

There was some talk that Wentz could head to New York to sign with the Jets, which would have reunited him with offensive coordinator Frank Reich, his former head coach with the Colts. Wentz would have assuredly backed up Geno Smith in New York, and he may have found himself competing with a rookie too. By staying in Minnesota, Wentz gets to run it back with an offense he’s still familiar with while building on the existing chemistry he generated with the likes of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and more.
