The Los Angeles Chargers have already been active this offseason with a few big moves, extending defensive tackle Teair Tart and hiring Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator. Before long, the team could reportedly move on from one of its key starters from this past season.
According to NFL insider Tony Pauline, the expectation around the league is that the Chargers will move on from offensive lineman Mekhi Becton this offseason. A year after signing his two-year, $20 million contract with Los Angeles, it appears that Becton has “reverted to his former ways” and added significant weight.

Becton, age 26, has had an up-and-down NFL career. He excelled as a rookie after being selected by the New York Jets with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Then, the 6-foot-7 lineman dealt with injuries that resulted in him playing just one game over the next two seasons.
After New York moved on from him following the 2023 season, he signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and kicked inside to guard. He emerged as the starter on the right side, playing a key role in Saquon Barkley’s 2,000-yard season. Becton turned that success in Philadelphia into his $20 million contract with the Chargers.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, it has proven to be a disastrous signing. Becton finishes the season rated by Pro Football Focus as one of the worst linemen in the NFL. He allowed three sacks, drew five penalties and received the lowest PFF run-blocking grade (34.3) among guards.
Becton’s play this season has really left the Chargers front office with a seemingly easy choice. Cutting him frees up $9.7 million in cap space, per OvertheCap.com, which would push Los Angeles to $90 million in cap room this offseason.
