A new report suggests some around the NFL believe the Los Angeles Rams are going all in to build a title contender in 2026 because they expect both Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay to walk away from the franchise after next season.

After a down year and reload in 2022, the LA Rams are on another hot streak and have been one of the NFC’s best over the last three seasons. They seemed to hit another peak in the McVay era when Los Angeles won 12 games and came up just short of reaching the Super Bowl in January.

As frustrating as their loss to NFC West rivals the Seattle Seahawks in the conference championship was, they are bringing back much of the same team from 2025 and still have designs on a Super Bowl trip next season. On Wednesday, they bolstered the chance of that happening when they swung a blockbuster trade to acquire Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Trent McDuffie.

In the deal, the LA Rams gave up their first-round pick next month. It was another instance where the team’s front office was willing to pass on building the future to improve their Super Bowl chances now. Furthermore, there is a belief that they must maximize what could be their last season with reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford.

The 38-year-old is in the final year of his contract, and it is very likely the organization decides to go in a different direction at quarterback after next season, or he chooses to retire following 18 punishing seasons in the NFL. Yet, he may not be the only key member of the team leaving after the 2026 season.

Sean McVay to retire after 2026 season?

According to NFL insider Todd McShay, he claims that people around the game believe the reason why the LA Rams made the McDuffie trade and are all-in on winning a championship next season is not just because it could be Stafford’s final season. There are many who believe that their head coach could also walk away from the organization after next season.

“I’ve heard that from multiple places from people who are inside the league,” McShay said about McVay walking away after the 2026 season.

After winning the Super Bowl during the 2021 season, there were rumblings that McVay could retire from the game. However, the 40-year-old has coached four more seasons in Los Angeles. The rumor is surprising because McCay and general manager Les Snead signed contract extensions last month.
