Kansas City Chiefs training camp just opened for the first day of practice on Sunday. We know defensive leader Chris Jones isn’t in attendance as he seeks a new contract, but the other members of the reigning Super Bowl champions were in action on a fine afternoon for football.
Unfortunately, the return to contact also led to an injury for one of the pass-catchers expected to make a big impact during the 2023-24 season.
According to coach Andy Reid, Kadarius Toney “tweaked” his knee during a special teams portion of today’s practice. He would not return to the field. We have not yet received another injury update on the 6-foot receiver, but the Chiefs do practice again tomorrow. We’ll see if Toney’s able to join his teammates Monday.
Travis Kelce is clearly the leading target for Patrick Mahomes. That won’t change this season. But Toney is projected to be one of the biggest X-factors at the wide receiver position in Kansas City as he prepares for his second full season with the Chiefs.
Toney, a former first-round pick by the New York Giants, is still just 24 but also battled injuries during his time in the Big Apple before being traded. He’s appeared in a total of 22 games, counting the playoffs over the past two seasons.
But the shifty receiver entered camp penciled in as a starter next to Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Skyy Moore. Depending on the severity of the injury, the Chiefs might have to turn to second-round rookie Rashee Rice more often instead.
