Like all teams eliminated from the postseason, the Kansas City Chiefs are taking time to re-evaluate their coaching staff. Head coach Andy Reid is safe; he’s not going anywhere. But that doesn’t mean the rest of his coaching staff won’t feature some form of change. One could be a pretty big change.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s contract is up. While the Chiefs would like to retain him, and Nagy likely wouldn’t have any issues with returning for his sixth season as offensive coordinator, nothing is guaranteed.
If Nagy manages to land another head coaching opportunity, the Chiefs will have to shift some parts around and find a new offensive coordinator. Yet, there could be an obvious solution who may be thrilled with reuniting with Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City.
Specifically, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggested former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury as a prime candidate to take over Kansas City’s offense. Kingsbury’s ties to Mahomes date back to when he was his head coach at Texas Tech.
“The Matt Nagy situation is one to watch. The Chiefs’ offensive coordinator is a free agent who will entertain his choices. Those include head coaching opportunitites — he’ll be a candidate in Tennessee, among other spots — and possibly as a playcaller/OC elsewhere. Kansas City certainly could attempt to keep him. But Nagy is also willing to bet on himself. And, if Nagy were to leave, would Kliff Kingsbury have a chance to slide back into Patrick Mahomes’ life as Chiefs OC? It makes a lot of sense.”

If Kingsbury isn’t able to land another head coaching opportunity, then reuniting with Mahomes may be the next best thing. After all, if he can help Mahomes get back to top form, he’d surely be considered for more future head coaching opportunities, and it may not take more than a season to get there.
