Two Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks have now been lost with season-ending injuries. First came Patrick Mahomes with an ACL and LCL tear. Then, on Sunday, his replacement and Kansas City’s top backup QB, Gardner Minshew, suffered a non-displaced tibial plateau fracture, ending his season too.

As a result, the Chiefs need to add another quarterback to a roster that only has Chris Oladokun on it. On Monday, the Chiefs did just that.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have signed Shane Buechele to the active roster. Buechele had been on the Bills’ practice squad, but he previously spent time learning Kansas City’s offense from 2021 to 2022.

Buechele was undrafted coming out of SMU in 2020. He’s now 27 years old, but has never attempted an NFL pass.

Oladokun will presumably be the Chiefs’ starting quarterback on Thursday against the Denver Broncos. This past Sunday was his NFL debut, where he completed 11-of-16 passes for 111 yards.

No matter who starts at quarterback in Kansas City, the end result against Denver, one of the NFL’s elite defenses, will probably be an ugly result. Yet, it could be the type of breakout performance that lands Oladokun or Buechele a bigger opportunity in the future. If nothing else, it’s a chance to learn from their mistakes and work on them throughout the offseason.
