In an interesting turn of events that is surely just the New York Jets attempting to save face, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan has released a statement proclaiming the following regarding quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick:

“I have no regrets about bringing Ryan back,” Maccagnan said, via NJ.com. “I think going into it, we felt very good about the season Ryan had previously. I have no regrets from that standpoint. Of course, I think everybody, and Ryan included, would probably say he holds himself to a fairly high standard. I’m sure there are aspects that he would like to … we all would like to have better success on the field as a team. But from the standpoint of bringing Ryan back, no, I don’t have regrets on that.”

Fitzpatrick has completed a paltry 56.4 percent of his passes while throwing just eight touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions. This led him to getting benched in favor of Geno Smith earlier in the year. It also comes on the heels of the veteran signing a one-year, $15 million deal to return to the Jets.

After hurting his knee in last week’s game against the Miami Dolphins, the Jets are on a bye week and the team is mulling over a permanent switch to second-year quarterback Bryce Petty, a former fourth-round pick out of Baylor who caused a stir on social media earlier this year by saying he learned how to read defenses by playing Madden (more on that here).

All this adds up to another abysmal season for the Jets, and leads one to wonder if second-round rookie draft pick Christian Hackenburg will ever be good enough to beat out the depressing trio of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith and Bryce Petty.

Regardless, the Jets must find a franchise quarterback this offseason, in a draft class truly void of top-tier talent at the position outside of Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph.

Pray for the liver of Jets fans, they sorely need it.
