The Indianapolis Colts seemingly have their franchise quarterback in 29-year-old Daniel Jones, but he’s coming off a torn Achilles. He’s also only signed through the 2027 season.
Based on the first-half of last season’s play, the Colts should have no reason to consider adding a potential future starter. Yet, once Jones had a knee injury, he became an entirely different player, which is understandable.
However, there may still be some doubt deep inside the minds of Colts general manager Chris Ballard and coach Shane Steichen about whether the future answer at QB might not be on the roster yet.

Recently, Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer mentioned the Colts as a team that could find themselves enamored with Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby, whose 2026 NCAA eligibility is now in extreme doubt. Sorsby may have to enter the supplemental draft to continue his football career, and the Colts may want him as their developmental QB.
“This is only getting more interesting, especially with a number of teams that didn’t spend top-50 picks on quarterbacks in April having their eyes on the 2027 class, and a few, like the Steelers and Colts, still could take a swing here. If Sorsby is in the supplemental draft, another question will be whether the NFL takes any action against him, like it did against Terrelle Pryor in 2011.”
Of course, as Breer noted, it’s possible the NFL will impose some sort of suspension on Sorsby. Which, likely wouldn’t be a big deal to the Colts, who are moving forward with Jones and still have Anthony Richardson, plus 2025 sixth-round pick Riley Leonard.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel recently called Sorsby a “top-five quarterback prospect right now.” If he’s really that type of prospect, then it makes sense for teams like the Colts to consider him, as Sorsby is being viewed as a potential Day 2 selection. Getting a first-round talent with a second or third-round pick is the type of value many general managers simply can’t say no to.
