Although it’s been a tough offseason of saying goodbyes to big-name players and even franchise icons like C.J. Ham (retirement), the Minnesota Vikings have to be happy with their roster thus far. They haven’t been afraid to take chances, like cutting bait with two former Pro Bowl defensive tackles, only to replace them with a pair of rookies.
But the defensive line isn’t the only area that’s been overhauled. The secondary is also missing a key figure, as franchise icon Harrison Smith was released from the roster this offseason. The six-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro has played in 207 games since 2012, but there’s been no word on whether Smith has plans of playing a 15th NFL season.

However, according to SKOR North’s Vikings insider Darren “Doogie” Wolfson, there’s a chance that Smith could still decide to return for another season.
It’s worth noting that while Smith is no longer under contract in Minnesota, he also hasn’t filed his retirement papers.
“He is staying in shape,” Wolfson said. “We can’t rule out retirement. ”
Wolfson wondered aloud whether the 37-year-old Smith would even consider returning to the Vikings closer to mid-season, allowing him to avoid training camp plus a potential bad start to the season.
Or, what if both the Vikings and Smith are giving the younger defensive backs a chance to soak up the reps, seeing what they’re capable of before making a permanent decision on his playing future? It’s possible this situation gets another update closer to training camp. Or, as Wolfson suggested, possibly closer to when the team holds joint practices against the Ravens.
“Could it be by the time joint practices occur with Baltimore that Harrison Smith signs on August 18th? I suppose. I’m not ruling that out. I think it’s more likely that it happens than it doesn’t happen. I think a 15th season is coming, I really do.”
While the Vikings appear prepared for the possibility of playing without Smith after adding Jakobe Thomas in the third round, rookies are never a sure thing. In a Brian Flores system that heavily relies on three safeties, the Vikings would certainly benefit from another season from their franchise icon.
