A new report offers up more details on why the New York Giants and other NFL teams have interest in Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. As well as the other names on Big Blue’s head coach contenders list.
For the fifth time since moving on from legendary head coach Tom Coughlin a decade ago, the Giants are in search of a new head coach. While Brian Daboll gave fans hope after a 9-7-1 debut season that included a playoff win, the team turned into a laughing stock over the next three seasons. Leading to his in-season ouster in November.
Over the last week, talented Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has emerged as a candidate for the Giants and other potential head coach openings around the league. The possibility has surprised many since he is only 39 years old and has been a head coach for just four seasons in college football.
However, on Saturday, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini explained why he is drawing so much attention from the NFL despite his inexperience.
“Though he has never coached in the NFL, his leadership, people skills, and ability to thrive in one of the most high-profile jobs in the country are what’s drawing the interest of general managers and owners,” Russini wrote.
Other Candidate for the NY Giants Head Coach Job

While Freeman is an interesting candidate for the NY Giants job, he isn’t the only person the organization will likely interview for the position after the season. Along with her intel on the Notre Dame head coach, Russini revealed the other names expected to be in the running for the role.
“The New York Giants have a list of candidates for their head-coaching vacancy. I’m told the names on it include Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak,” she wrote.
It’s no surprise that three coaches known for their defensive expertise — including Freeman — could be in the running for the job after going with an offense-first coach in Daboll. However, it is interesting that the organization is still keeping its options open and will talk with offense-geared coaches as well.
