The 2026 NFL Draft takes place at 8 p.m. ET tonight, and the Detroit Lions hold the 17th overall pick in the first round. After missing the postseason in 2025, nailing their first-round selection will be key for continued roster growth.
Yet, the Lions may not be content with sticking and picking 17th. They may have their eye on a top prospect who Detroit feels won’t make it to their draft slot.
According to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Lions have been “making trade calls” leading up to Thursday’s event. He adds that “some teams are watching Detroit as a trade-up threat.”
The Lions may be eyeing one of many offensive tackles projected to be first-round picks after Taylor Decker requested and was granted his release. Detroit’s plan is to switch Penei Sewell from right to left tackle, but the Lions still need a replacement on the right side for their All-Pro.
Of course, Lions general manager Brad Holmes has been known for a few draft day surprises. Oftentimes the Lions go into the night with a specific need, only to emerge with a different playmaker. Perhaps that’s what they’re planning again.
With a total of nine draft selections, the Lions do have a bit of extra ammo to play with. Yet, they also don’t have a third-round pick this year, so dipping into their 2027 draft capital may be necessary for a big move up.
