When Calvin Ridley got suspended last season for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, it felt like an isolated incident. We couldn’t have been more wrong. Several suspensions have since followed, and now the Denver Broncos are the next team set to pay the price.
While the Broncos are far from the only team impacted by the league’s gambling policy, they are the latest organization to be placed under the microscope after Monday’s news.
According to Tom Pelissero, Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended indefinitely for betting on multiple NFL games during the 2022 season. The 116th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft will be able to petition for reinstatement next year on July 24, 2024.
While Uwazurike is far from a household name around the NFL, he was still the Broncos’ fourth-round pick just a year ago and had yet to receive many opportunities to show what he could do. The 25-year-old played in eight games last season, seeing just 165 snaps on defense and another 33 on special teams.
Now the 6-foot-6, 310-pound defensive lineman’s development has taken a big hit by not being able to gain any experience during the upcoming season. His best bet now is to focus his attention on becoming the best football player he can possibly be by the time next July rolls around.
