After seeing their offense slip from ranking first in scoring in 2024 to ninth in 2025, the Detroit Lions fired first-year offensive coordinator John Morton. Going back to their old OC isn’t an option, as Ben Johnson is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears (and thriving).
Now the Lions will need another new offensive coordinator and potential playcaller. Though finding someone who’s excited about getting to work with Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta shouldn’t be difficult.
Still, in a landscape where nine teams are hunting for a new head coach, it may take a while before the Lions can find their guy. However, there is one person who’s already lining up to take the job, if the Lions are interested.
That person is former Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky, who’s become far more well-known for his work as an NFL analyst, where he specializes in evaluating all things related to the QB position. Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, Orlovsky expressed his strong desire to be the next offensive coordinator in Detroit.
“I would do it very much so in Detroit. I love that place, I love that organization, I love a lot of those people that are there. I love Jared. I’m a big Jared guy. So, I love everything about Detroit,” Orlovsky said. “Detroit’s loaded. Loaded, loaded, loaded, loaded. I want the interior of the offensive line to be better. But, yeah, great place.”
Orlovsky is not believed to be an actual candidate for the job, but based on his frequent breakdowns of quarterback play, he sure seems like he could handle the Xs and Os of the job. Whether he could actually successfully step into a coaching role after having never previously done so is unknown. Yet, everyone gets their start somewhere and this may be Orlovsky’s chance too.
