With Zack Martin’s retirement, the Dallas Cowboys are already replacing one starter on the offensive line. Now, after Sunday’s training camp injury, the Cowboys may have to start the season with another replacement starter from last season’s group.
Earlier during Monday’s Cowboys practice, starting left tackle Tyler Guyton went down with what appeared to be a potentially serious injury. Later in the day, the Cowboys’ worst fears initially appeared to have come true.
According to NFL Network’s expert Ian Rapoport, Guyton is “feared to have torn his ACL.” However, later reports confirmed a much lesser injury.
Guyton reportedly suffered a bone fracture that will only keep him out anywhere from four to six weeks.
While initial fears almost guaranteed the Cowboys would be in the market for a new starting left tackle, they may prefer to keep their current group intact. Otherwise, they could look to find a quick replacement on the free agent market, where players like David Bakhtiari remain available. Though the two-time All-Pro was out of football last season, there’s no guarantee the 33-year-old will ever return.
The Cowboys could always turn to the trade block to solve their depth needs. If so, they could place a call to the Kansas City Chiefs for Jawaan Taylor, who may be in line to lose his starting role a year after inking a four-year, $80 million contract. If the Cowboys are willing to take on his contract, Taylor could likely be acquired for a late-round pick, perhaps even a sixth or seventh-round selection.
