It’s been just over a week since the Buffalo Bills fired Sean McDermott following their playoff loss to the Denver Broncos. Keep in mind, the Bills only lost by three points, and he’d brought them to the postseason in each of the past seven seasons.
Newly-appointed team president Brandon Beane has been busy identifying replacement candidates ever since. But it hasn’t been easy trying to find the right coach for the job, especially for a role that comes with such high expectations.
However, the Bills are steadily making progress. On Monday, they’re set to interview another coach, and he’s available to hire right now after his team was eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday night.
Specifically, the Bills have become the latest team to interview Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase. The 35-year-old coach has only been with the Rams since 2024 and he’s never been a head coach at any level.
However, he’s already had two interviews for the Cleveland Browns’ head coaching job, with the most recent one occurring earlier on Monday. Now, he’s set to meet with the Bills.
Scheelhaase is even fairly new to the NFL as a whole, as his lone pro experience has come in the past two seasons. Prior to that, he spent nine seasons across Illinois and Iowa State.
Scheelhaase was at Illinois for three seasons, first as a running backs coach and lastly as an offensive assistant. He then joined the Cyclones as their RB coach in 2018 before working with receivers from 2019 to 2020. In 2021, Iowa State promoted him to their running game coordinator/RB + WR coach.
Finally, in 2023, Scheelhaase landed his first job as offensive coordinator, still with Iowa State, where he also coached their QBs that season. A year later, he landed on Sean McVay’s coaching staff with the Rams. Now, he appears poised to land an NFL head coaching opportunity, possibly filling the most desirable vacancy left, where he’d get to work closely with 2024 NFL MVP Josh Allen.
