It sure looked like the New Orleans Saints were going to come back and defeat the Houston Texans at home on Monday night.
New Orleans found itself up 27-21 and needing to defend 75 yards of real estate in 50 seconds.
What followed was complete and utter insanity. Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson hit DeAndre Hopkins on a 38 yards pass to move the ball inside New Orleans’ 40-yard line.
Then, on the very next play, Watson hit recently-acquired former Saints receiver Kenny Stills on a 37-yard touchdown to tie the game up.
That wasn’t even the end of it. Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn missed the potential game-winning extra point. However, Saints rookie Chauncey Gardner-Johnson was flagged for roughing the kicker. It gave Fairbairn another opportunity for the kick, which he nailed.
At that point, it seemed the game was going to end in Houston’s favor. Not so fast. Drew Brees led a last-minute drive down to the Texans 40-yard line, at which point Saints kicker Wil Lutz nailed a game-winning 58-yard field goal as time expired.
It goes without saying that the football world absolutely lost its mind as the Saints walked off with a 30-28 win.
