New NFL rumor offers positive update on if Travis Kelce returns to Kansas City Chiefs in 2025

A new NFL rumor making the rounds offers up a positive update on the Kansas City Chiefs’ chances of getting Travis Kelce back in 2025.

The Chiefs and their fan base are still licking their wounds after the team was drubbed by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 a few weeks ago. The defeat not only ended their championship hopes this past season but also stopped KC from being the first team to ever win three straight Super Bowls.

Heading into this month’s game, there was a familiar storyline. And that was on if legendary tight end Travis Kelce will be back next season. The 35-year-old has flirted with the idea over the last few years. And with a growing podcast and acting career, there has been a lot of speculation this would be the year the 10-time Pro Bowler would call it a career.

There have also been reports in the days since the Super Bowl that made it seem like he was leaning toward retirement. However, an update this week from The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini suggests Kelce is not ready to walk away from football just yet.

  • Travis Kelce stats (2024): 97 receptions, 823 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns, 8.5 yards per catch

“There’s definitely a sense that Travis is going to try to play more,” Russini said during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show this week. “I haven’t heard anyone saying ‘Yeah, he’s really struggling with what he wants to do.’ It’s definitely leaning more towards that. That can of course change. But for this Chiefs operation looking to move forward here, I think they feel pretty good that Travis has a little more left in him.”

That certainly will be a relief to Kansas City Chiefs fans. While his stats have been on the decline for the last two seasons, he is still an impact player on the field and in the locker room. Furthermore, his average yearly salary of $17.5 million is not a bad rate considering what he brings to the team.

Nevertheless, with the salary cap growing in 2025, the Chiefs need to bring in more weapons in the passing game for Patrick Mahomes with Kelce’s best days behind him.
