The NFL and NFLPA got together this week to talk about a potential extension of the current collective bargaining agreement that runs through the 2020 season.
Unlike back in 2001 when there was a short work stoppage, things seem to be a bit more optimistic this time around.
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, conversations this week have already concluded with one source close to the situation calling them “productive.” The insider also notes that talks will pick up once again in late July.
There’s certainly a whole host of issues that need to be settled before an extension can be ironed out. Among them, guaranteed pay and the NFL’s archaic marijuana policy.
NFL owners have also sought to potentially increase the regular season to 18 games. If that were to happen, the union would demand higher pay and more guaranteed cash.
At the very least, things seem to be trending in the right direction. Whether that means a new deal can be completed ahead of the 2019 season remains to be seen.
