MLB insider urges New York Yankees to go after major player from New York Mets 2024 roster to fix 2 major problems

A notable MLB insider recently urged the New York Yankees to make a bold move to pick up a key member of the New York Mets’ 2024 roster to address their ongoing problem at third base and against lefties.

There are big expectations for the Yankees heading into the new season. After a trip to the World Series in October, the goal is to finish the story this fall and bring the franchise a 28th championship. Sure, they lost Juan Soto in free agency. However, many around the game feel the moves they made after have created a better roster than the one they had in 2024.

Yet, they have some clear weaknesses heading into the start of the new season. The most notable is at third base. While Jazz Chisholm manned the position late in the season, he will be over at second in 2025. Fourteen-year veteran DJ LeMahieu was penciled in to the spot this spring. However, to the surprise of no one the 36-year-old suffered an injury last week that could sideline him for a significant amount of time.

It leaves Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza as their next best options at the position. Furthermore, it takes a key righty out of a heavy lefty batting order. But this week, New York Post MLB insider Joel Sherman made a strong case for the Yankees to go after an impact player still available in free agency. None other than Mr. OMG himself, Jose Iglesias.

Should the New York Yankees go after New York Mets alum Jose Iglesias?

“So why would I recommend Jose Iglesias, who had lingered on the free agent market as March began?” Sherman began by writing. “Iglesias is New York proven and a terrific glove who can handle third base. He hit an MLB-high .402 last year in 101 plate appearances vs. lefty pitching. He had an outsized .456 batting average on balls in play vs. lefties.

“While this level of success feels unsustainable, in his previous two MLB seasons — 2021-22 — (He was not in the majors in 2023), Iglesias had a .296 average in 315 plate appearances against lefty pitching with a .328 average on balls in play,” he added. “In other words, even if he is not great like last year, the recent track record states he is really good.”

  • Jose Iglesias stats (2024): .337 AVG, .381 OBP, .448 SLG, .830 OPS, 4 HR, 26 RBI, 39 R

Surprisingly, the New York Mets did not re-sign Iglesias in the offseason. Despite some in and outside the organization believing he played a massive role in their mid-season turnaround and playoff birth. Before joining the team from Queens, the one-time All-Star was seen as a journeyman who couldn’t earn a big league spot.

However, his performance last season should be something the New York Yankees seriously consider. He would not come at a high cost and could address not one but two key issues heading into the 2025 season.
