Aaron Boone will be back as the New York Yankees manager in 2024, but it seems that the team’s owner kicked off recent executive meetings by asking if the team needed to make a switch at the top of their coaching staff.
While the Yankees continued their streak of seasons with an over .500 record this year, the 2023 edition of the team was a massive disappointment. Besides the pandemic-shortened 2020 MLB season, the 82 games the team won is their lowest win total since 1995. And that is not a good look for manager Aaron Boone.

After beginning his tenure in the Bronx with back-to-back 100-win years, things have gone downhill. In 2021, the Yankees finished in second place in the American League East after winning 92 games, bounced back with a big 99 victory showing in 2022, and then came the frustration of 2023.
Without a doubt, injuries had a major part to play in the team’s results this year, but there still seemed to be enough talent to be better than 82 wins, and that falls on the skipper.
Many Yankees fans have called for the head of Boone over the last couple of months, and if there was ever a time that they might get what they wanted, it would have been in October after the team fell well short of the high Pinstripes standard.

On Tuesday, New York owner Hal Steinbrenner actually admitted he seriously considered firing Boone with one year left on his contract.
“Obviously the first question that I asked [this offseason] had to do with should Aaron Boone be our manager next year,” Steinbrenner said today during a Zoom press conference with reporters (via SNY). “I believe based on a lot of things that he’s a good manager, but I didn’t want to take my opinion this time around. I wanted to talk to a number of people, which I did.”

While reviewing the team’s results in 2023 and Boone’s role in it, the Yankees owner spoke with current players, former players like Andy Petite and Nick Swisher — who were around the team often this year — and members of the front office, including advisors Brian Sabean and Omar Minaya.

In the end, the reason not to let go of his manager was clear. “They all came to the same conclusion, which is Aaron is a good manager and he should be our manager in 2024,” Steinbrenner said.
Boone is in the final season of his current contract which will make 2024 very much a prove-it year for the 50-year-old manager.
