Once one of the game’s best players and a three-time All-Star, outfielder Matt Kemp’s career now seems on the brink of being over after being released for the second time this season.
Less than two months after they signed Kemp to a minor-league contract, the New York Mets released Kemp on Friday evening.
Kemp appeared in just eight games this season with Triple-A Syracuse and struggled at the plate. He posted a .235/.278/.324 slash line and recorded nearly as many hits (eight) as strikeouts (seven).
After landing on the 10-day injured list with a fractured rib with the Cincinnati Reds in April, Kemp experienced lingering effects from the injury in June and hasn’t played with Syracuse since June 8.
The 34-year-old will likely need additional time to rest and rehabilitate the injury before he’d be ready to return to an everyday role for a pro team. At this point, it could also just be the end of his baseball career.
