MLB rumor reveals potential trade New York Mets could make soon that cuts costs and fills key need

A new report suggests the New York Mets could be eyeing a trade that cuts payroll costs while also addressing a need heading into the start of Spring Training.

This was a very good offseason for the Mets. They entered the fall and winter with a clear directive to improve a roster that shocked many by reaching the NLCS in October. However, they had several holes to address in their pitching staff along with getting better.

While they did not go big game hunting on the pitching market, they did make several interesting additions to the staff and re-signed fan-favorite Sean Manaea. Then there is the fact that they won the Juan Soto bidding war in December. And then last week finally came to terms on a new deal with beloved All-Star Pete Alonso. However, the club would still like to tinker with their roster before the season kicks off next month.

One area they still would like to add to is the bullpen. However, they have a ton of money invested in their roster. If they could cut some payroll and improve the team that would be the best of both worlds. Well, a new report from Sports Illustrated New York Mets insider Pat Raggazo may reveal a path to do both.

  • Starling Marte contract: One year left, $20.7 million

In a new column, Ragazzo detailed how New York has been shopping outfielder Starling Marte since December. And while they were getting closer to a deal that would have sent him to the Kansas City Royals, the two teams could not get across the finish line. However, the organization would still like to move him to shed payroll and is allegedly willing to pay a large chunk of the $20 million he is owed next season.

The Mets have been linked to rumored discussions with the San Diego Padres for a potential trade for either Dylan Cease or Michael King. However, Ragazzo claimed some executives around the game believed the Mets could instead target reliever Wandy Peralta and send Marte back in the deal.

  • Wandy Peralta contract: Four years, $16.5 million

San Diego needs outfield help and Marte would certainly fill that need. Coming at half the price and only costing the Padres a reliever could certainly appeal to them. Especially with Peralta owed over $15 million for the next three seasons (Player options in 2026 and 2027).

Even if the New York Mets picked up half of Marte’s contract, they would still save a few million and add a rock-solid arm to the bullpen. One who has previously done well under the bright lights of New York during a two-and-a-half-year stint with the Yankees.
