After conducting a second round of interviews for their vacant general manager role, the New York Giants have beaten everyone to the punch in making a final decision. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen has been hired by the Giants.
Well, not officially. The organization still needs to finalize the contract details, but both Schoen and the Giants are in agreement that he will become the GM for the G-Men.
All the other general manager candidates who were in the running for the role have been notified that they are no longer being considered.
We took a brief look into the final three candidates yesterday and even speculated some potential head coach hires should Schoen get the job. Now that he has the gig, look for the Giants to rapidly accelerate their head coach interview process once he signs on the dotted line. Most notably, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll could be the favorite for the gig.
It should also be noted, prior to the Giants hiring Schoen, the organization didn’t plan to do a “package deal”, by hiring a GM and coach in one fell swoop. A full search process is still expected to occur.
Joe Schoen takes on task of rebuilding Giants into contender
With experience in three different organizations, working his way up from a ticket intern to now general manager, Joe Schoen has worked several roles throughout his NFL career. Most notably, his background is heavily based in scouting and player personnel, both areas the Giants could use some help in.
Now, Schoen faces the tall task of helping bring Big Blue back to relevance after missing the playoffs for five consecutive seasons. He should at least get a boost from having two draft picks within the first seven selections in April.
But before Schoen can dive into roster decisions, the Giants need to find a head coach first. Although the odds were generated before the Schoen hiring, Daboll appears to be the early favorite. This hiring should only ignite the flame even further.
