The Dallas Mavericks acquired veteran guard J.J. Redick from the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday as they look to make a playoff push, The Athletic reported.
Forward Nicolo Melli will join Redick in moving to Dallas. In exchange, the Pelicans will receive forwards James Johnson and Wes Iwundu and a second-round draft pick, per the report.
Entering play on Thursday, the Mavericks are 23-19 and in seventh place in the Western Conference but only four games behind the fourth-place Los Angeles Lakers. With the trade for Redick, the Mavericks are acquiring scoring help in the backcourt for star Luka Doncic in the stretch run.
Redick, 36, struggled to find a groove with the young Pelicans this season, however. A career 41.5 percent shooter from 3-point range, he’s hitting just 36.4 percent of his threes.

In his 15th season, Redick is averaging 8.7 points in 18.6 minutes in 2020-21. In 927 career games (488 starts), he has averaged 12.9 points with the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and Pelicans.
Melli has seen limited action for the Pelicans this season, appearing in just 22 games and averaging 2.0 points and 2.6 rebounds. The 30-year-old Italian is in his second NBA season after a career overseas.
A 12-year veteran, Johnson, 34, is headed to his eighth team. He has career averages of 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 663 games (221 starts).
Iwundu, 26, is in his fourth season. In 205 career games (49 starts), he is averaging 4.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists.
