The NCAA got some bad press Tuesday when news broke that Trevor Lawrence and his girlfriend, Marissa Mowry, had to take down a GoFundMe page they set up to help those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The reason for this is that the NCAA has a rule against student-athletes from using their name, image and likeness for crowd funding.
Not long after national sites started featuring this story, the NCAA reportedly reached out to Clemson and that it “will allow university discretion on charities that support the community during this crisis,”per Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.
Lawrence and Mowry raised $2,670 in less than a day before they were forced to take their GoFundMe page down. No doubt, given the publicity surrounding the NCAA’s rule that ended that effort, they’ll be able to raise a lot more going forward.
The two student athletes are raising money to help fund Meals on Wheels and No Kid Hungry, which are crucial resources during this health crisis in America.
