New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has gone viral with more evidence that he is one of America’s best sports mayors.
The new mayor of the most populous city in the United States has been a divisive figure in political and social circles over the last year. The 34-year-old has some bold, progressive ideas to improve the city that have endeared him to middle and lower-income New Yorkers, but have bothered some very wealthy residents.
Yet there is one area where he and his detractors can align: Sports. Mamdani has earned a segment of fans in the city for his love of sports. He is a big supporter of Premier League club Arsenal, and he reportedly loves local franchises like the Mets, Giants, and Knicks. Furthermore, in past social posts and during recent interviews, he comes off as a legitimate fan, not a politician just pandering to sports enthusiasts.
Well, on Thursday, he once again proved he is a serious sports fan and doesn’t use the power of his position to get beneficial treatment at major sporting events.
Zohran Mamdani sits in nose bleeds for Knicks vs. Cavaliers Game 2
Late last night, a video from Instagram influencer 2Cool2Blog went viral, showing him with the New York City mayor at Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers. Yet, instead of being down near the court in the expensive seats, the moment clearly took place in the Madison Square Garden nosebleeds with the Knicks’ true diehard fans.
Furthermore, the video didn’t come off like a publicity stunt and looked like a real moment between a pair of Knicks fans. The mayor could easily have gotten a seat near the court because of the position he holds. Instead, he sat up with regular fans and took in the game just like the middle-class residents he represents.
Mamdani earned more cool points with Knicks and New York sports fans this week.
