President Trump said Wednesday during a Cabinet meeting at the White House that he plans to attend at least one game of the NBA Finals as the New York Knicks pursue their first championship in decades.

The Knicks advanced to the Finals for the first time since 1999 after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals, clinching the series in dominating fashion on Monday night.

Trump, a longtime Knicks supporter, revealed he had initially planned to attend Game 5 of the conference finals at Madison Square Garden but adjusted his schedule after the quick sweep.

While that didn’t quite work out, the President may be able to attend a game of even greater significance.

Trump Confirms Plans to Attend Knicks Games at MSG

“I was invited to the – I was going to go on Wednesday, but they closed it out very quickly,” he said. “Boy, what a team. They won all their games. They have some great players.”

“I think I’ll be going to one of the games. I was invited by numerous people and [Knicks Owner] Jim [Dolan]. And I think I’ll be going,” added Trump. “Great, great to see it.”

The President went on to point out that the Knicks have been a long-suffering franchise but are now “doing right.”

The NBA Finals are scheduled to begin next week in New York, with the Knicks facing either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs.

Trump’s potential appearance at Madison Square Garden would add to his recent high-profile attendance at major sporting events, including NFL games and UFC fights.

Hochul’s Knicks Jab Spectacularly Backfires

New York Governor Kathy Hochul attempted to undermine the President’s claim of being a lifelong Knicks fan by questioning his knowledge of the team’s history. It backfired in spectacular fashion.

When asked about Trump’s plans to attend NBA Finals games at Madison Square Garden, Hochul suggested challenging him to name the starting lineup of the Knicks’ supposed 1993 championship team. Only, there’s just one problem—the Knicks did not win a title in 1993.

Their last championship came in 1973. They reached the Finals in 1994 but lost to the Houston Rockets.

The Knicks have been one of the most dominant playoff teams, outscoring their opponents by a historic margin en route to the championship series. Whether it’s the Spurs or the Thunder, the Western Conference representative in the Finals better be prepared to run into a buzzsaw.
