With Devin Booker and Kevin Durant on board, plus Deandre Ayton, the Phoenix Suns already possess one of the best rosters in the NBA. Yet, even this All-Star crew couldn’t get past the Western Conference Semifinals this postseason, leading to coach Monty Williams’ dismissal. Frank Vogel has since picked up the clipboard for the Suns, but there’s still a sense roster changes are coming to Phoenix.
Chris Paul’s situation is one that bears watching this summer as the future Hall of Fame guard has been linked to several teams if he gets released. Despite supportive comments from coach Vogel, it’s possible Ayton could be on the move this summer too.
While we may have some semblance of an idea on the outgoing players from the roster, who will be joining Booker and Durant next season in Phoenix?
One potential addition could come via the Boston Celtics. According to Yahoo’s Jake Fischer, the Suns have “registered interest” in trading for guard Malcolm Brogdon. These rumors date back to the NBA trade deadline when the Suns were reportedly sniffing around Brogdon before finding a way to land Durant.
But the trade talks could resurface this summer, as Boston is said to be “active” in offseason trade discussions as they look to get back to the NBA Finals again in 2024. Plus, Brogdon may not be in the team’s long-term plans, as the 30-year-old is under contract for $22.5 million in each of the next two seasons.
Last year was Brogdon’s first in Boston, and while he made 67 appearances, cracking a starting lineup that features Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum doesn’t seem possible. After peaking with 21.2 points per game with the Indiana Pacers in 2021, Brogdon’s scoring averages have dipped since, cratering to 14.9 PPG with the Celtics in 2023.
If Brogdon headed to Phoenix, it’s possible he could be looking at grabbing hold of their starting point guard job, especially if Chris Paul is jettisoned off the roster. At the very least, he’d provide another extremely efficient shooter for coach Vogel to mix into the rotation.
