The Miami Heat have been eliminated from playoff contention. On Tuesday night, the Heat lost to the Charlotte Hornets in overtime, ending their season in the Play-In Tournament. This was a shocking development, as Miami led within the last 24 seconds of regulation and overtime.
Now, the Heat will move forward with missing the NBA playoffs for the first time since the 2018-19 season. Since trading Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors, this hasn’t been the same Miami team. It is clear that Heat president Pat Riley and company have to find a way back to the NBA playoffs.
This is why major changes are coming within the organization.
What is the Miami Heat’s top goal for the 2026 NBA offseason?
The Heat enter the 2026 NBA offseason with the hope of finding a superstar player. Miami was the only team in the Eastern Conference to not make a move during the 2026 NBA trade deadline after pursuing Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. Expect more of the same this offseason.
Following a disappointing end to the season, the Heat will be in the market for a superstar this offseason, including Antetokounmpo, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The NBA organization has swung and miss at superstar players over the last five years, but this is the time to make a move.
“The Heat, Pat Riley, it’s clear around the NBA when I talk to rival executives: Pat Riley wants his whale, his shark, his tiger,” Charania said on NBA Today. “He went out last summer and made offers for Kevin Durant. They didn’t land Kevin Durant.”
“At the deadline, they made offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo. They offered Tyler Herro, Kal’el Ware, and a bunch of draft capital. The Bucks didn’t move Giannis, but they’ll be back in the Giannis hunt, and then whatever star they can find that becomes available to see, can we get that number one guy? [Bam Adebayo] is the cornerstone, but just the understanding of finding that number one option, that offensive juggernaut that they depend on nightly to be that dude.”
Riley and the front office are ready to make a big acquisition this summer. It seems like everyone will be on the table except Bam Adebayo.
Why the Miami Heat can’t strike out on a superstar now
Miami can’t strike out on an NBA superstar this offseason. The Heat have tried to acquire Antetokounmpo, Durant, Donovan Mitchell, Damian Lillard, and many others in the the last six years. None of the ended up in Miami, even after Lillard listed the organization as his preferred destination.
The Heat have been in the Play-In Tournament for four straight seasons. The organization has lacked the ability to pick high in the NBA Draft in exchange for first-round exits and a magical run as the No. 8 seed in 2023. Miami didn’t get over the hill in the 2023 NBA Finals, leaving it looking for more.
Now, it is time to pick a direction. Riley and the Heat have to either acquire a superstar or blow up the roster and start over around Adebayo. Miami can’t afford being stuck in basketball purgatory any longer. The team has struck out on too many superstars while mismanaging assets over the last few seasons.
The Heat haven’t been very proactive in changing the team in the 2020s outside of acquiring Kyle Lowry and trading Butler to Golden State. It has been too long since Miami has acquired a true No. 1 to lead the team into the NBA Finals. Quite frankly, Antetokounmpo is the answer.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is the answer to the Miami Heat’s problems
Milwaukee nearly pulled the trigger on Miami’s package at the NBA trade deadline, but chose to wait until the offseason. It seems like a divorce is coming and the Heat have to be there to pounce. Everyone and everything needs to be on the table to acquire Antetokounmpo this offseason.
The 31-year-old superstar has dealt with injuries, but a change of scenery could put him in a better situation. The Heat should offer Tyler Herro, Kal’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and all of the possible picks they can trade to the Bucks. Miami should also try to navigate multi-team trades to offer Milwaukee even more.
This is it for Riley. After years of struggles to acquire a pure NBA superstar, Antetokounmpo is likely on the table. If the Heat can’t find a way to acquire Antetokounmpo or another difference maker, it is fair to question the future of the organization. Antetokounmpo will lead the team on offense, defense, and in the locker room.
Adebayo has done well in this role, but it is clear he can’t do it all by himself. Antetokounmpo changes everything and he brings the Heat from Play-In Tournament mediocrity to contenders in the Eastern Conference. It can’t stop there either. Riley would have to build the best team possible around the two star players.
There is time before the Heat must go “all-in” on trading for Antetokounmpo or another superstar. For the first time this decade, Miami will be watching the NBA Playoffs and waiting for the the transactions to begin this summer. This is why the Heat have to make major changes.
This is not the “Heat Culture” standard.
