The San Antonio Spurs‘ remarkable run to the NBA Finals this year has earned recognition from one of basketball’s most respected voices, Magic Johnson.
After San Antonio’s resolute 111-103 Western Conference Finals Game 7 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night, the Hall of Famer took to social media to congratulate head coach Mitch Johnson, Victor Wembanyama, and the entire Spurs organization.
“I want to congratulate San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Mitch Johnson, superstar Victor Wembanyama, and the entire Spurs organization for advancing to the NBA Finals!” Johnson wrote on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the final buzzer.
Magic Johnson‘s message served as another reminder of how quickly the Spurs have reemerged as one of the NBA’s elite teams.
Much of the credit has gone to Wembanyama. The Frenchman delivered another dominant all-around performance in the series-clinching win. Furthermore, Mitch Johnson’s calm leadership and tactical adjustments as head coach also helped San Antonio overcome the defending conference champions.
The Spurs’ defensive discipline proved especially critical in Game 7. They limited Oklahoma City‘s offensive rhythm in key stretches to complete a hard-fought series comeback. With a showdown against the New York Knicks now awaiting, San Antonio enters the 2026 NBA Finals carrying not only momentum but also the respect of a basketball legend like Magic Johnson.
Indeed, San Antonio’s 2026 playoff run has been one of the league’s defining stories. After dispatching the Portland Trail Blazers in five games during the opening round, San Antonio eliminated the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games.
The team then battled the defending champion OKC Thunder through seven intense games. A convincing Game 6 victory forced a deciding contest, and San Antonio responded with poise on the road to end Oklahoma City’s reign and book the franchise’s first NBA Finals appearance since 2014.
