The idea of LeBron James finishing his career anywhere other than Los Angeles seemed very likely a couple of months ago. Even less so when word spread he was expected to opt into the final year of his contract, worth $52.6 million. Well, that may no longer be the case.

Following his opt-in, a statement from his long-time agent, Rich Paul, put pressure on the Lakers to prioritize getting better this summer so he can chase another title, while also having an eye on the future. Furthermore, new rumors have emerged about potential interest from certain teams around the league. With all of that in mind, let’s look at five franchises that could actually pursue a LeBron James trade if he asks out soon.

Dallas Mavericks

On Monday, Los Angeles Lakers insider Jovan Buha claimed there has been renewed “buzz” about the Dallas Mavericks’ interest in bringing James to Big D. Two years ago, there were rumblings about the 21-time All-Star going to Dallas after they acquired Kyrie Irving. Now, fellow friend and former teammate Anthony Davis is also there. On a roster level, and with Jason Kidd coaching the team, Dallas is a very intriguing option for the future Hall of Famer.

New York Knicks

James has been linked to the New York Knicks for well over a decade. However, the NBA icon wearing a Knicks jersey has never been close to reality. However, with New York close to a title, they could be desperate enough to feel he is the missing piece to a championship team. On a financial level, trading Karl-Anthony Towns for James would give them cap flexibility after next season. And the Lakers might be open to the idea of pairing KAT with Luka Doncic.

Miami Heat

Returning to South Beach and reteaming with team president Pat Riley would definitely appeal to James. And if the Lakers were willing to take Andrew Wiggins and Terry Rozier back in a deal to make the money work, a trade could get done. On paper, LeBron James, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro are an intriguing trio. Especially with the East wide open next season. The big question is, would the Miami Heat want to invest in a one-and-done reunion with a 40-year-old?

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves failed in their pursuit of Kevin Durant. Could they attempt a blockbuster for LeBron James? They are definitely one piece away from getting to the Finals. And LA could be intrigued by a package that includes either Rudy Gobert or Julius Randle. While it is not likely, if James became available, the ‘Wolves will inquire about the cost.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are another franchise that took a hard look at a Durant trade. They have an insane amount of emerging young talent, and yearly borderline All-Star De’Aaron Fox. The Spurs have the draft assets that would appeal to the Lakers. However, would the Spurs still have the pieces of a title contender that appeals to James after a deal? That may be the biggest hindrance to James heading to San Antonio. But they can’t be ruled out.
