A pair of new Cleveland Cavaliers rumors reveal big updates on the discount James Harden will take to return in 2026-27 and a potential summer pursuit for future Hall of Famer Giannis Antetokounmpo.
On Monday, the Cavaliers saw a memorable playoff run come to a disastrous end when they were loudly eliminated from the postseason by the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals. While it was an ugly finish to the campaign, they still took a key step forward, and many inside the organization feel they are not far from being a serious title contender.
One of the top priorities for the front office this summer will be making sure Harden remains with the team, since he is viewed as a key part of why they reached the Conference Finals this year. The 11-time All-Star has a $42.3 million player option for next season and is expected to exercise it to land a new multi-year deal in free agency.
Not having to pay that number in 2026-27 will be a big help for the Cavaliers. And while they want Harden to return — the feeling is mutual — Cleveland wants to dip under the second tax apron this summer. Meaning they need the future Hall of Famer to take far less money than he would get next season.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the word around the game is that Harden will likely take a deal “in the $30 million range annually.” That would be a solid pay cut for the one-time NBA MVP because he made just over $39 million this past season.
Cavaliers not expected to pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo trade for multiple reasons

In recent weeks, there has also been speculation about the Cavaliers joining the trade chase for two-time MVP Antetokounmpo. Many around the NBA believe 24-year-old big man Evan Mobley is a trade chip that could make Cleveland’s offer better than most.
However, according to Fischer, “sources say that the Cavaliers should be regarded as unlikely to factor into the trade chase for Antetokounmpo this summer. No matter how high Evan Mobley ranks on the Bucks’ wish list for trade returns in a theoretical Giannis deal.”
The NBA insider claims there are two reasons why the Cavs are unlikely to pursue a deal. First, Cleveland has serious doubts that the Milwaukee Bucks legend would sign an extension with the team. Making any deal far less enticing.
Furthermore, many in the organization believe Mobley could serve as a bridge in the evolution of the roster if Donovan Mitchell opts out after next season, or is traded because he is unwilling to sign a contract extension this summer.
