On Tuesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the 10-time All-Star is expected to have surgery to repair ligament damage in his left hand, and the recovery from the procedure is expected to sideline him for the rest of the season.
The news is sure to make the Hawks, Warriors, Raptors, and any other team that was pondering a trade pivot to a new target. Well, maybe not.

Davis is expected to miss months as he rehabs following surgery. However, that apparently hasn’t slowed interest in a trade one bit. According to Charania, “The Mavericks are having renewed Davis trade talks with multiple interested teams,” he wrote in a follow-up report.
Why would teams trade for an injury-prone player who will be unavailable for months? The NBA insider claims that if the team that acquires him reaches the playoffs, his timeline would lead to a return during the postseason.
So, despite Davis being an injury waiting to happen, his ability to make a big impact on both sides of the court when healthy is still highly valued, and teams would risk a trade without guarantees that he will suit up for them in the second half.
