If the New York Knicks don’t win an NBA Championship or reach the finals this spring, a new report reveals a likely roster pivot that will underwhelm a segment of Knickbocker fans.

The next month and a half will be pivotal for several NY Knicks players, and possibly officials in their front office. Before the 2024-25 season, the organization went all in and used most of its trade assets to acquire Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns. When they came up just short of reaching the finals, it was blamed on former coach Tom Thibodeau.

This time around, the onus is on the players to reach their potential and get the team to the finals for the first time since 1999. While New York has been one of the better teams in the NBA all year, there are many pundits who believe they won’t be good enough to overcome the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons in the East.

Unsurprisingly, it has led to a lot of speculation about the roster being shaken up after the season if they don’t get to the NBA Finals. Including a potential pursuit of Milwaukee Bucks legend Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, a new rumor offers a different target that may not thrill fans dying for the team to end a 53-year championship drought.

Report adds fuel to a NY Knicks-LeBron James partnership this summer

According to a new report from ESPN, the NY Knicks are open to the idea of signing LeBron James this summer in a move a source claimed would put the team in “win-now mode.” Beyond an affection for Madison Square Garden, James has deep ties to several team officials. Including Mike Brown, who coached him to his first Finals appearance and two of his four MVPs, Knicks president Leon Rose was once James’ agent, and executive vice-president William Wesley has known James since his teenage years.

The report suggests James would be added to the current core that the team has, and it would need to be on a veteran’s mid-level exception deal. The 22-time All-Star has been linked to the teams for years and is one of the greatest NBA players of all-time. However, hoping a player who turns 42 in December and is a lock to miss over 20 games will be the missing piece to their championship puzzle is unlikely to excite many NY Knicks fans.
