Deron Williams is the NBA’s eighth highest-paid player, and the league’s second highest-paid point guard behind Chris Paul. Unfortunately for the Brooklyn Nets, his production has declined steadily since signing his monster contract, and he’s no longer considered among the elite point guards in the league. Just how far has Williams fallen? According to an anonymous poll conducted by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman (Insider paywall), the drop is substantial:

“To be honest, I’m not sure how he’s even this high on the list. He’s been pretty bad the last few years. He’s slow, can’t get by anyone — and can’t guard anyone on the other end of the floor. He’s not even the best point guard on his own team right now.” — NBA executive
The poll tallied the votes of 25 people around the NBA, including coaches, executives and players. Even Williams’ head coach Lionel Hollins seems to agree with the above assessment, often using backup Jarrett Jack (28th on the list) to close out games. It’s possible Williams now owns the league’s most onerous contract, a distinction once held by teammate Joe Johnson.
Touted by then head coach Avery Johnson as an MVP candidate when he joined the Nets, Williams’ play has been uninspiring during his time in New Jersey and Brooklyn. His averages of 12.9 points and 6.1 assists per game are his worst since his rookie season, and recurring ankle injuries have left the three-time All-Star looking like a shell of his former self.
Likely to miss the playoffs for the first time in three seasons and with limited assets, the Nets will be looking to rebuild through any available means this Summer. Moving Williams, who has been reported to want out, will be general manager Billy King’s top priority.
Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook topped the survey, followed by Golden State’s Stephen Curry and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Paul.
