A new rumor about one MLB team’s money concerns opens the door for the New York Yankees to make a big addition to their starting rotation.
This has been a very underwhelming offseason for the NY Yankees. Pinstripes fans are used to the fall and winter being when the front office is most aggressive to make big additions to the roster. They did it two years ago when they traded for Juan Soto, then last year when they signed Max Fried. Both proved to be fantastic moves.
So it makes sense for NY Yankees fans to expect that to happen again. However, as we close in on pitchers and catchers arriving at camps in Florida and Arizona, the biggest moves the club has made are retaining outfielders Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger.
Supporters being disappointed is understandable. Especially as they watch the New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers make big additions. Yet, there are still impactful moves to be made, and a new rumor opened the door for one the NY Yankees should jump on.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, several teams have paused making any worthwhile additions over concerns about their TV revenue in 2026 due to financial troubles for FanDuel Sports Network’s parent company. One of those clubs is the Cincinnati Reds.
Last week, Rosenthal also reported that “The Reds remain open to the possibility [of trading a starter] if the return improves them for the present and future.”
Should the NY Yankees pursue a trade for Hunter Greene?

The NY Yankees would like to add an impact pitcher since Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon won’t be ready at the start of the season. If the Reds are having money concerns and might be willing to move a pitcher to alleviate some of those issues, the Pinstripes should inquire about a trade for Hunter Greene.
Although he dealt with injury woes in 2025, the 26-year-old posted another season with an ERA below 2.80. In 2024, he had a breakthrough season as he earned All-Star honors and won nine games. A starting rotation with Cole, Rodon, Fried, and Greene next season would be outstanding. Furthermore, he is signed for the next three seasons at a very affordable rate for a star player, and he has a $21 million club option in 2029.
The NY Yankees certainly have players that would appeal to the Reds in a potential trade. Obviously, Jazz Chisholm could be part of a potential trade package. He is a proven bat, can play multiple positions, and is making just over $10 million in the final year of his deal.
Anthony Volpe could be another option if the Reds feel there is still huge potential in the one-time star prospect and Gold Glove winner. Especially since he is only making $3.5 million. Also, 2024 Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is sure to be included in a trade to replace Greene in the rotation. Plus, the Yanks could add a top 20 prospect to a trade package.
While it wouldn’t be easy, the door is open for the NY Yankees to turn their rotation into, arguably, the best in baseball. And by giving up players, the front office would be willing to part with in the deal.
