New York Mets fans are understandably worried they could lose closer Edwin Diaz in MLB free agency this winter. However, a new report offers two huge reasons why that is very unlikely.
Heading into the offseason, Mets fans are wondering about the future of homegrown fan-favorite Pete Alonso. The five-time All-Star is coming off another big season, and it comes just in time for him to opt out of the final year of his contract and test his value again in MLB free agency.
However, Alonso’s popularity has overshadowed the fact that there was another top player who also had the chance to opt out of his contract: Edwin Diaz. Well, this week the speculation was put to rest, and the three-time All-Star made it official, because he will also be available on the open market this winter. While Mets fans will be hurt if Alonso leaves, a big slugger is easier to replace than an elite closer.
Edwin Diaz stats: 28 S, 1.63 ERA, 0.874 WHIP, 98 SO, 21 BB, 66.1 IP

But a new report from Sports Illustrated Mets insider Pat Ragazzo should ease the concerns of New York fans. “Diaz’s market might not be that robust considering the league’s reluctance to pay top dollar for relief pitching,” he claims.
Diaz opted out of the record-breaking five-year, $102 million contract he signed two years ago. He was set to make just under $16 million in 2026. He is sure to be looking for more money annually or a long-term pact.
Furthermore, there is something else that will help the Mets retain the star closer. Ragazzo notes Diaz also has the qualifying offer attached to him. This means that teams would have to fork over a draft pick if they sign him this offseason. That was another reason for Pete Alonso’s weaker-than-expected market a year ago.
