Trea Turner Nationals

A month after he suffered a broken right index finger after getting hit by a pitch, Washington Nationals star shortstop Trea Turner might be nearing the first big step to a return.

According to The Athletic’s Brittany Ghiroli, Turner is progressing well in his recovery and the team expects he should be able to take some swings next week.

The injury: Turner squared up to lay down a bunt during Washington’s game on April 2 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Phillies pitcher Zach Eflin’s pitch came inside and hit Turner squarely in the finger.

  • Turner was diagnosed with a non-displaced broken right index finger after the game.
  • After Wilmer Difo struggled in his absence, Washington called up top prospect Carter Kieboom to fill-in.

Potential return: Turner is now reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery, which is great news for a team in need of a boost.

  • The 25-year-old is still likely two-to-three weeks away from a potential return to the top of Washington’s lineup.
  • When Turner returns, the Nationals could shift Kieboom to second base given current starter Brian Dozier has a .645 OPS and .193 BA through 27 games.
