After an underwhelming start to the 2026 season, the Toronto Blue Jays have been linked to a trade for a future Hall of Famer to help get back into title contention.

This has been a frustrating start to the Blue Jays’ follow-up campaign after reaching the World Series last fall. Their defense hasn’t been as effective as last year. They have just one player with double-digit home runs and lack power in general as we near June. And they have been hammered by injuries to key players throughout the year.

It’s why they are three games under .500 and 9.5 out of first place in the American League East. However, if they can get healthy, there is still a ton of upside in their roster. Furthermore, Mark Shapiro and Ross Adkins are sure to look at making moves that could get them the final pieces of a championship team.

Well, according to New York Post MLB insider Joel Sherman, he believes that if the New York Mets consider trading Francisco Lindor during what has been a disastrous season, he believes the Blue Jays would be serious contenders. The reason why is that Shapiro and Adkins have a successful history with Lindor when they were all together in Cleveland.

Why would the New York Mets consider a Francisco Lindor trade?

Sherman notes that he does not expect Lindor to be traded. However, he speculated on the possibility because the Mets own a 22-33 record and have been MLB’s biggest disappointment so far this season. And a very expensive one at that.

Furthermore, there have been rumblings since last year that he and their top star, Juan Soto, don’t get along, and it may be causing problems in the locker room. Sherman and fellow NYP insider Jon Heyman suggested that if they can’t build a bond, it would not be outlandish if they break them up and move one or the other. However, Soto’s massive contract would be extremely hard to trade.

If a trade were to happen, Sherman believes a deal would probably include Anthony Santander, Andres Gimenez, and “a prospect or two.” The future Hall of Famer has five years and over $160 million left on his contract.

The five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner has missed much of this season following surgery for a stress reaction/fracture in his left hamate bone and a calf strain.
