Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman is opting out of his three-year, $120 million deal as he seeks a longer contract with more guaranteed money this offseason. Despite missing 48 games due to a quad injury, the 31-year-old made his third All-Star team, finishing the season with 18 home runs, an .821 OPS and 128 OPS+. He will have many suitors for his services this winter. Here are the top six teams that will pursue Bregman.

Bregman became the clubhouse leader for a young team in his first season in Boston. Bringing him back is of the utmost importance for the Red Sox as they undergo a youth infusion with Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell. Bregman helped lead the Red Sox back to the playoffs for the first time since 2021, and losing him in free agency would be a brutal blow for the franchise.

The Detroit Tigers pursued Bregman last offseason before he ultimately signed with the Red Sox. With the All-Star now back on the open market, it makes sense for Detroit to aggressively pursue him again. Tigers third basemen struggled offensively in 2025, tied for 25th in home runs (11) and 27th in OPS (.628). Bregman’s presence in the lineup would immediately address that weakness.

Chicago Cubs

Another team that pursued Bregman last offseason was the Chicago Cubs, and with Kyle Tucker entering free agency, they might need to replace his offense in the lineup. Bregman could solidify a third base position for the Cubs that was also tied for 25th in home runs (11) and 29th in OPS (.621). The biggest appeal? He won’t cost as much as Tucker, which would be music to ownership’s ears.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies will be looking to shake up a lineup that failed for a third straight postseason. They could do that by trading third baseman Alec Bohm and bringing in Bregman, especially if the Phillies fail to re-sign Kyle Schwarber. Bregman would provide the right-handed bat the Phillies have needed in their lineup for years and would also improve the infield defensively. Even though it would be another long-term deal for a player in his 30s, owner John Middleton would not be afraid to shell out the money.

Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays have struck out on top-tier free agents the last two offseasons in Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto. But with the team two wins away from its first World Series appearance since 1993, it has become a much more attractive destination. They signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a $500 million contract extension, and with Bo Bichette’s free agency looming, they might need to replace his bat in the lineup. Bregman could fill that void. Blue Jays third basemen ranked 20th in home runs (14) and 21st in OPS (.728).

Seattle Mariners

Another ALCS team that could pursue Bregman this offseason is the Seattle Mariners. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez, acquired at the trade deadline, will be a free agent, and the Mariners could upgrade with Bregman, who is younger and plays better defense. A top of the order featuring Bregman, Randy Arozarena, Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez would be formidable.
