The Boston Red Sox plan to respond to the big hole in their batting order after Alex Bregman’s exit is to get more pitching?
This has already been an underwhelming offseason for many Boston fans. After a better-than-expected season and a trip to the playoffs, the club’s supporters hoped for more big moves like last year when they traded for Garrett Crochet and signed Bregman. While they have added players, they are levels below what fans wanted.
The additions of veteran Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras aren’t bad moves, but they have seemingly been offset by some key departures. The most notable came last week when they lost their All-Star third baseman, Bregman, in free agency to the Chicago Cubs.
Bregman’s exit has enraged Red Sox fans, and they are demanding that the team quickly address the loss of his talented bat and high-level defense in the lineup. It’s why the club has been linked to a pursuit of Toronto Blue Jays star Bo Bichette and Cubs veteran Nico Hoerner.
However, while those are certainly options, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox may go in an unorthodox direction to address Bregman’s loss.
Red Sox Targeting Trade For Freddy Peralta

The MLB insider reports that “people briefed on their thinking” claim Boston may pivot away from trying to add an infielder to replace Bregman and will focus on adding more pitching. So, what pitcher could they target? Well, Rosenthal suggests it would be two of the top names on the trade and free agent market: Freddy Peralta and Ranger Suarez.
The Milwaukee Brewers ace is in his walk year and is only making $8 million in 2026. However, it will still take a strong offer to get him now instead of before the summer trade deadline.
As for Suarez, recent rumors have suggested that he might be open to taking a short-term deal if it comes with a high annual average value.
While neither addresses losing Bregman’s numbers in the lineup, they would help create a strong one-two rotation combo this year with Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet.
