The Philadelphia Phillies have signed a 56-home run star from the 2025 MLB free agency class. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Phillies are signing free-agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber to a five-year, $150 million contract. Schwarber, who joined Philadelphia in 2022, will be with the Phillies through the 2030 season.

There were several teams linked to Schwarber, such as the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, and Cincinnati Reds, but a return to Philadelphia always made the most sense. According to Passan, the Orioles made a strong push, but the Phillies’ last effort put the contract over the top.

In 2025, Schwarber hit 56 home runs and drove in 132 runs, both career highs. The Phillies did not want to let Schwarber walk and were prepared to pivot if he went elsewhere. Ultimately, the 32-year-old superstar returns to the place where he has flourished in MLB.

Schwarber will give Philadelphia elite power hitting in the lineup and primarily serve as the team’s designated hitter. The Phillies needed to bring Schwarber back to the organization, and the fifth year is likely what put them over the top. Schwarber isn’t going anywhere, as he will continue to slug in Citizens Bank Park.
