A notable MLB insider believes the big trade the New York Mets could make before the deadline this summer is for a two-time All-Star pitcher with a World Series championship on his resume. But it’s not the player most fans of the team might expect.

We are just hours away from the start of the NY Mets’ 2026 campaign. Despite a disastrous finish to last season, there is a lot of hope about this year’s team. The reason is the major additions the front office made in the winter.

After months of seeing some of their favorite players leave, Mets fans got reason for excitement when the team added high-impact veterans Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., and Freddy Peralta in January. Along with other offseason moves, the NY Mets have a team that can be very good this season.

However, it’s very likely they will make more roster changes during the season and could add impact arms to the rotation.

NY Mets predicted to make Nathan Eovaldi trade

That is why The Athletic MLB insider Jim Bowden offered up an interesting prediction on Wednesday. “With a year and a half remaining on his contract, starter Nathan Eovaldi is traded by the Texas Rangers to the NY Mets at the deadline.”

The 14-year veteran is a two-time All-Star and played a key role in Texas’s run to their first World Series championship in 2023. However, over the last two years, the club has been linked to the pursuit of a Miami Marlins two-time All-Star, Sandy Alcantara. The one-time Cy Young winner would be a huge addition in the second half.

But, New York feels they may have a long-term ace in Peralta if they ink him to a new contract during the season. They also believe youngster Nolan McLean could be their ace in the years ahead as well. So their need to acquire a true ace is not dire like it once was. So adding a player like Eovaldi to bolster their depth and bring playoff experience is a savvy prediction by Bowden for later this summer.
