A new rumor about the San Diego Padres might allow the New York Mets to land one of their elite arms in a big trade.

A few weeks ago, NY Mets fans were enraged after four core members of their team departed in trades and free agency, including All-Stars Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz. However, this month, they have completely changed the narrative about this offseason.

After coming up short in the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, they responded to that failure by giving Toronto Blue Jays All-Star Bo Bichette a three-year deal worth $126 million. They then traded for high-upside Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. Followed by a blockbuster for the starter they wanted when they acquired Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.

For the most part, the NY Mets seem finished making big moves this offseason. Especially since they gave up two of their best prospects, Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, in the trade for Peralta. However, interesting news from San Diego offers the club the chance to add a big-time talent to the bullpen.

Yu Darvish is contemplating retirement

A recent report from San Diego Union-Tribune writer Kevin Acee claimed that Padres starter Yu Darvish was seriously considering retirement after battling injuries the last two seasons. In a response on X, the 39-year-old pitcher did not deny retirement was an option. However, he claimed he will still attempt a return to the mound.

“I will not be announcing my retirement yet,” Darvish wrote. “Right now, I am fully focused on my rehab for my elbow, and if I get to a point where I can throw again, I will start from scratch again to compete. If once I get to that point, I feel I can’t do that, I will announce my retirement.”

In December, rumors circulated about the NY Mets and Padres having discussions about a variety of players. One of the names New York was allegedly interested in is one-time All-Star Mason Miller. The Darvish news may make a trade for the fire baller a bit more possible.

Should the NY Mets make another run at a trade for Mason Miller?

If the club doesn’t want to move any more top prospects, they do have some pitchers and young infielders they could offer in a deal. One-time All-Star Kodai Senga, veteran Sean Manaea, and two-time All-Star reliever turned starter Clay Holmes could be made available in a trade and be solid or better Darvish replacement options.

Young slugger Mark Vientos could intrigue the Pads, as well as Brett Baty, because of his solid bat and versatility in the infield and possibly as a corner outfield option. Talented infield prospect Ronny Mauricio also has upside and could be included in a deal.

As of now, Mason Miller is expected to be San Diego’s closer in 2026. However, if they feel certain NY Mets veterans can improve several areas, they might consider a trade. His addition to New York’s pen would be a huge addition and potentially give them one of, if not the best, bullpens in MLB.
