A top New York Mets insider believes that if they decide to sell off pieces of their expensive roster before August’s MLB trade deadline, fans should not expect strong returns that help replenish the minor league system.
There is no other way to say it than that the 2026 season has been a disaster for the Mets. They have been hit by a bunch of major injuries to key players, including Francisco Lindor. But more frustrating is that they have gotten underwhelming returns from much of the roster, including expensive offseason addition Bo Bichette.
They head into their game on Wednesday with a sad 22-33 record and are on the verge of being swept in a second straight series, this time to the Cincinnati Reds. That is why it should come as no surprise that there has been a lot of speculation around the team about being sellers before the summer trade deadline unless they have a huge turnaround.
The Mets have traded away or promoted quite a few of their elite prospects over the last couple of years. Replenishing that talent pool would make throwing up the white flag and selling before the deadline worth it. However, according to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, outside of Freddy Peralta and his expiring contract, rival teams won’t give up elite prospects for what the Mets might offer.
Freddy Peralta is only NY Mets player with good trade value around MLB

“The way this season has gone, I think they have to be open to everything, and outside of Peralta, I don’t think they have another player that they could get a significant return on,” Sherman said this week.
The Mets do have some veteran players that other teams would covet. However, they either have massive contracts that other teams don’t want to touch (Juan Soto, Bichette, and Lindor) or relievers that won’t get notable prospects in return (Huascar Brazoban, Brooks Raley, and Devin Williams).
Peralta is one of the few players with a proven track record who is having a solid season and doesn’t come with a bunch of money owed to him for several more years. In a season full of bad news, this just adds to the pile for New York Mets fans.
