The New York Mets are a contender in 2025. However, a top insider for the club believes not one, not two, but three Mets alums will win the biggest yearly awards in MLB this fall.

The Mets have a real chance to win the National League East this summer and make a run to the World Series. Especially if they make some impact trades before the July 31st trade deadline. They have a strong lineup that features stars Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso. A rock-solid rotation and an All-Star closer in Edwin Diaz.

They are so good this season that even former players are starring for other teams. Some Mets alums have been so impressive this year, SNY MLB insider Jon Harper believes three of them could win some of 2025’s top honors for rival clubs.

“I know it would bring some pain to Mets fans, but it would also be kind of cool if [Jacob] deGrom and [Zack] Wheeler were to pull off such a unique daily double [of winning AL and NL Cy Young]. And both are very much in the running going into the second half,” Harper wrote about the former Mets pitchers.

Harper believes the Philadelphia Phillies ace’s biggest competition for the honor is Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes. The former Mets first-round pick went to the All-Star game for the third time this week. And his 2.36 ERA over the first half is the best of his 11-year career.

DeGrom is one of the greatest pitchers in New York baseball history. After a pair of injury-riddled seasons in Texas, he has had a big 2025 for the Rangers. He earned All-Star honors for the fifth time this year. And his 2.32 ERA so far stands as the third best of his 12-year career. But, Harper admits deGrom will have serious competition for the AL Cy Young in Tarik Skubal, Garrett Crochet, Max Fried, and Hunter Brown.

Former Mets star prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong will win the 2025 NL MVP Award?

However, deGrom and Wheeler weren’t the only former Mets talents the insider believes will score a year-end award later this year.

“It’s looking more and more like trading Crow-Armstrong for Javier Baez in 2021 could haunt the Mets for years. Especially since center field is currently their most glaring position need,” Harper wrote about PCA. “They never envisioned him blossoming offensively the way he has this season, with 50 extra-base hits, including 25 home runs, to go with 27 stolen bases and Gold Glove-caliber defense.

“Shohei Ohtani has more impressive offensive numbers. But not to the level of last season. And it remains to be seen how much impact he has as a pitcher this year. PCA currently has a much higher WAR number, 5.2 to 4.0, because of his base running and defense, and today’s MVP voters seem to lean heavily on that metric as a guide to voting,” he added about his most valuable player chances.

Crow-Armstrong was the Mets’ first pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. However, he was traded a year later for Baez. He was viewed as a top prospect in New York’s system and became an elite talent for Chicago. He has had a breakout season for the Cubs in 2025 and earned All-Star honors for the first time this month.

One can only imagine how good the Mets would be this season if they had all three on the roster this year.
