In the fallout of a rough week for the New York Mets, the club is reportedly working on a trade that could land them a young star to potentially replace Edwin Diaz.
This was a week from hell for many Mets fans. Not only did they lost franchise home run king Pete Alonso in free agency to the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles Dodgers lured All-Star closer Edwin Diaz away with a record contract for a reliever.
The two huge departures have enraged supporters of the team and has them wondering what President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, is doing. There has been a lot of speculation about how the club will replace the two All-Stars, as well as address other needs this offseason. Well, a new rumor emerged on Saturday of some potential deals they are working on.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Dennis Lin, Will Sammon, the team is engaged in conversations with the San Diego Padres about trades for various players on the opposite team. But it is not a deal involving a couple of big names linked in recent rumors.
“The teams are engaging, according to people briefed on their conversations. Neither of their rumored superstars, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor nor Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., are part of the talks,” the outlet claims.
NY Mets Interesting in Trade for Mason Miller

The Mets are reportedly interested in five specific players according to the outlet, but one of the most intriguing is fireballer Mason Miller. The one-time All-Star has electric stuff and has been one of the best relievers in the league over the last two seasons. While he struggled a bit in the first half, after being acquired by the Pads, he posted a 0.77 ERA and 0.729 WHIP in 22 appearances for the NL West club.
There have also been rumors about Miller potentially being converted to a starting pitcher in the near future. However, it is unclear if that is the plan the Mets have in mind. As of now recent acquisition Devin Williams will probably be the closer in 2026, but Miller certainly has the stuff to steal the job in spring training.
The other players New York has interest in are outfielder Ramón Laureano, relievers Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada, and starting pitcher Nick Pivetta.
